Aquanow Digital Dives: Using Tech in a Community Setting — Vol. 9

  • An organization is defined as an association of interests, which can be represented by individuals or groups, that share common values and/or who interact in a patterned way.
  • Decentralization is more nuanced as it occurs when power is “broadly distributed,” which leaves much to interpretation. Typically, this involves voting to direct the group’s actions. However, the power to act unilaterally can be delegated under certain circumstances.
  • To be autonomous, a group’s methods of association and the resources on which they depend should be free of arbitrary extrinsic control. Using smart contracts doesn’t beget autonomy since these are simply lines of passive code that require human input to be called and brought into action.
  • The terms above exist on continuums, which makes their absolute identification difficult. However, DAOs should push their boundaries along as many vectors as possible to achieve the highest level of relative decentralization and autonomy given their set of constraints.
